Common Odors That Can Be Signs of a Bigger Problem in Hunterdon County Homes - Restoration 1 of Hunterdon County

When you notice a strange odor in your home, it’s easy to shrug off the problem. After all, most odors are minimal or fleeting. It could just be something in the refrigerator, you may even tell yourself. However, there are some types of odors so foul that they are indicative of a larger problem. The odor may be caused by chemicals, a gas leak, mold growth, or because of pets in the house. Simply smelling an odor is definitely not indicative of how bad the problem is, though. You’ll need to schedule professional odor removalto track the source and eliminate it thoroughly.

Do Odors Cause Health Concerns?

There are a number of odors that could be present in your home at any given time. Now, some of these smells will be commonplace – completely harmless. If the odor stems from a spilled chemical, for instance, then it will likely lead to health concerns. However, not every bad smell leads to health concerns in every person.

For some, odors may lead to asthma attacks, headaches, difficulty breathing, and long-term respiratory diseases or infections.

Dangerous Household Odors

  • Burning Rubber – The smell of burning rubber in the home is generally a sign of an electrical problem. A system within your home is overheating or melting its insulating plastic or rubber, which may eventually cause a fire. Call an electrician immediately.
  • Ammonia – The smell of ammonia is never an enjoyable one. It often means a small animal, such as a mouse, is decaying in the walls of your home. This decaying body can lead to all manner of illness or infection.
  • Musty Odors – A damp, musty odor is generally the first sign of a serious mold infestation in the home. It’s a big problem that can only worsen with time. Check behind the refrigerator, underneath the sink, or in the basement.
  • Rotten Egg Odors – If you happen to smell the telltale odor of rotten eggs in your home, it’s usually one of two things. A random rotten egg smell could mean a dangerous natural gas leak. Or, if the smell emanates from the hot water, it’s usually sulfur in the water.
  • Sewage Smell – A sewage smell, faint or otherwise, is generally a sign of a drainage clog or sewage backup in the home. The latter is often far worse, as it means contaminated sewage water leaking into your house and causing property damage and illness.

The moment you notice a foul odor in your home, take the matter seriously. It could mean something far worse just below the surface. Contact Restoration 1 of Hunterdon County at 908-364-7854 for professional odor removal.
